About Nikoline
Nikoline is an experimental musician and multi-instrumentalist based in Copenhagen. She has been part of the Danish underground music scene for over a decade, performing in projects such as Naturale, GAIA, Måneskjold, and Lucid Grave.
She also runs the label Virkelighedsfjern (founded 2016), which has released a wide range of Danish doom, black, and experimental artists.
About the release
Burnt Out Organic Matter is a journey through a mind in turmoil, created over a short period in 2025 defined by change, carrying both its joy and its pain.
The record is the final work the protagonist recorded in the now-demolished buildings on Siggurdsgade in the Nørrebro district of Copenhagen. The songs reflect struggles with IT, gender identity, and mental health, alongside moments of ecstatic joy and personal inside jokes.
It closes with το τραγωδία της γυνάκης που κλαίει (The Song of the Weeping Woman), created in collaboration with Aspasia Balta, incorporating samples of Greek dirges. The piece reflects grief over what has been lost while searching for solace in new beginnings — offering a calmer, more reflective ending to an otherwise hectic listen.
Musically, the EP was created through improvised sessions with synths and drum machines, driven by the relentless energy of the drum machine’s performance. It draws inspiration from the raw freedom of early industrial music and the increasingly distorted rhythmic structures of later techno, forming a kind of sonic escapist playground.
